Heartburn: A burning sensation or discomfort that can travel from your stomach to your abdomen or chest, or even your throat.
In the mouth, digestion begins with the teeth breaking down food into small pieces and the enzyme amylase in saliva breaking down starches into simple sugars.
The stomach is the organ where digestion continues to break down food into small particles for easier nutrient absorption.
This is the top of the stomach where stomach acid and pepsin, a digestive enzyme, begin to secrete. It is in the lower part of the stomach, which is muscular, where food is mixed with digestive fluids.

Then the carefully mixed and liquefied food passes through the small intestine for further digestion and absorption of nutrients. The last step when digestion is complete is the passage to the large intestine. The job of the large intestine is to extract water to make stool.
Our stomach is full of acid to digest food and it can handle it. Your esophagus can’t take the acid. When there is acid in the esophagus, it causes a burning sensation known as acid reflux or heartburn.
Acid reflux begins when the sphincter at the bottom of the esophagus relaxes at the wrong time, allowing stomach acid to back up into the esophagus.

If it persists, the acid can both damage the valve (which can cause several of the same symptoms) and damage the esophagus itself.
This standard list of foods is high in fat and protein, which stays in the stomach for a long time and increases the likelihood of acid build-up. Other foods are known to stimulate or irritate the stomach.
Antacids are the third most commonly used over-the-counter drug at 2.3 billion (2012 – US), while the sixth
The most commonly prescribed drug — generic Prilosec (53.4 million prescriptions) — is also an antacid. You can avoid the pharmaceutical industry with a home remedy consisting of 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda in water. Oddly enough (since it’s acidic), apple cider vinegar has also been shown to be helpful for quick relief.
Honey For Acid Reflux: Does It Work?
The best medical advice for acid reflux is to lose weight, as excess weight compresses the stomach and increases the tendency for stomach acid to be pushed up into the esophagus.
It’s easy to say, but the problem is that if people knew how to lose weight easily; You probably wouldn’t be overweight and wouldn’t have this acid reflux problem at all.
What is needed is a long term plan to be healthy. It will likely take care of obesity as well as acid reflux and a hundred other problems.

Differences Between Heartburn And Indigestion
Naturopaths have been telling us for years how dangerous antacids and antacid medications are.
When your long-term health depends on your digestion, the LAST thing you want to do is neutralize or block your stomach acid altogether. Even conventional medicine recognizes that this can lead to calcium and other mineral deficiencies.
Holistic practitioners take this a step further: they suggest that one of the main reasons we experience acid reflux is that our stomachs are generally LOW in acid (due to an ongoing stressful diet of irritating foods). The stomach gets used to this and builds up a smaller buffer against the acids, so when the stomach is eventually tricked into secreting more by obvious irritants like alcohol and caffeine, the system is overwhelmed.
I have had very severe acid reflux for most of my life. It started in my youth when the doctor gave me a yellow pill to take. I later discovered that it was important to watch what I ate. Of course, I’ve avoided most of what’s on the “foods to avoid” list.

The problem is I had no idea what was causing this problem so it just kept getting worse to the point where I was in extreme pain from almost anything I ate. Many nights I was propped up with pillows because I could not lie down.
One night the pain was so severe it echoed through my entire digestive system, from the appendix to my heart. The fear was that I was either having appendicitis or a heart attack, so we called the doctor who came to my bedside in the middle of the night. Luckily it wasn’t either.
The way I dealt with this was to limit any foods that caused severe pain after eating.
This meant that there were only twelve possible foods. Worse, not all of those 12 foods worked every day.

Eventually I went to a clinic for six weeks to do a major detox and slowly reintroduce food. I left the clinic eating 12 foods a day with no problem!!! It was a breakthrough.
What was that food? All but one were alkalizing foods and many were watery. I would eat a lot of watermelon all year round. Watermelon, celery, romaine lettuce, zucchini, blueberries, some fresh orange juice, fish, some avocado, some well-done potatoes and I drank a lot of vegetable juice. When these were among the ingredients of vegetable juices: carrots, bean sprouts and apples.
Finally, after years of extreme indigestion, I have regained my digestive health thanks to specific tests that informed me of my food sensitivities and the products to feed me again. The good news is that it worked! I am happy to say that I can now eat almost anything except chemical additives in food and I believe that is my body’s intelligence.
My experience led me to research and learn from a naturopath to heal my digestion. I have written two e-books on the subject.
