When I was looking for things to do in Valencia, I knew food would feature heavily! I always try to go on a food tour when I’m abroad, because I think it’s the best way to get to know a place. The food tells you a lot about a destination, and gives you a great introduction to the local culture and people.

I found a few food tours around Valencia (some of which included making your own tapas), but I knew I wanted to do a tapas game with a local. I was traveling alone, so it was nice to have an activity during the‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚Äčevening‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč

I booked my Valencia tapas tour through Get Your Guide (a company I’ve used before and trust!) and met the tour guide Gabriel by 7pm outside the Valencia Cathedral. A mother and two daughters from Holland joined us and a family of four from England. Eight is a big number – close enough for my friends to take a ride, but big enough to make a nice noise!

Gabriel explained that we will be visiting three places in the next two hours, each with a different type of tapas. We will try about eight different dishes, with alcohol or soft drinks.

He is a great host – professional, funny and full of stories. As we walked between the bars, it was nice to talk to him about life in Valencia, his favorite places and a bit about the culture. It was open and honest, and the evening covered topics including tourism in Spain, the Valencian language and why Spaniards eat late! We also discussed our experiences in San Sebastian, Madrid and Barcelona – debating where to find the best Spanish food!

Our first stop was at La Taberna de la Reina, across the plaza from the Cathedral. It didn’t look like anything special from the outside, but inside I found a bar full of delicious food on trees. This is the best time!

I had a few pintxos before (mostly in Barcelona), but it was good to hear more about them. Gabriel confirmed their origin in the Basque Country, a Spanish region bordering France. With the availability of fat baguettes, people began to use them as a base, and toppings on various things. Each pintxo comes with a stick running through it, sometimes of different lengths. Each stick has a value, so ultimately your server can only read the stick and tell you what to pay. .

At this bar we had the opportunity to choose our own pintxos from the plates on the bar. Lots of options – from padron peppers and tortillas, to sausages and shrimp. I chose one with ham, goat cheese and sweet marmalade, and the other with chorizo‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚Äčlike sobrasada, caramelized onions and ham. It was full of strong spices, and eaten in a few bites.

This style of food is very modern, and Gabriel encouraged us to visit several pintxos bars throughout the city, as each place has its own style. Pintxos in Valencia cost between 1 EUR and 3 EUR, so they are great as a snack with a drink, or as a light meal.

After walking through the busy streets of the old town, we found ourselves in the neighborhood of El Carmen. We entered the small Tasca el Botijo. With the pintxos ready, it’s time for the montaditos. Gabriel explained that these are similar to pintxos, because they are also usually on bread, but usually with a drink.

We started with small pieces of baguette topped with sobrasada – my favorite fermented chorizo ‚Äč‚Äčsausage‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč. Hmm!

Then the table was filled with delicious dishes of the country’s special food. I really like the esgarraet Valenciano – salt and garlic sauce with roasted red pepper inside.
