Dal Pakwan is one of my husband’s favorite dishes which we usually enjoy for Sunday breakfast. This dish can be enjoyed as a snack as well as an afternoon snack. Lentils are a protein-rich food that contains lots of fiber and nutrients.

The rich crunch of the dal pawan is a contrast of textures, flavors, and colors, with the delicious crunch of the dish, the mild healthiness of the mildly spiced lentils, the richness of the tamarind chutney, and the sharp kick of the raw onions. . . This recipe can be time-consuming, but the result is definitely worth the effort!

Mix flour, oil, salt and carom seeds in a bowl. Mix with your fingers until you get a bread cream like consistency in the mixture.

Heat oil for frying. To check if the oil is ready for frying, drop a small piece of flour in the oil. If it comes to the surface constantly and quickly, it means that the oil is at the right temperature for frying.

When the oil is ready to fry, gently drop the rolls into the oil and wait for a few seconds. Turn the pan on the other side until golden. Drain the dish on some absorbent kitchen towels.

Drain the excess water from the dal and add it to the pressure cooker. Add ginger and green chili paste, salt, turmeric powder, mango powder and 3 cups of water. Pressure cook for 2-3 sets.

When the chicken pressure settles on its own, open the lid. Drain the lentils and empty them into a bowl. Sprinkle red chili powder and garam masala on top of the dal.

For tamarind chutney, soak tamarind in 1 cup of water for half an hour. After that, squeeze the tamarind and strain it using a colander.

I prefer this dal on the spicy side but the spices can be changed according to your taste. If you choose to top your dish with lentils, keep the consistency of the lentils on the lighter side. For me, I cook chana dal in 3 sets but depending on the quality of the dal and the age of the dal, the cooking time may vary. Cook till the dal becomes soft and tender, one spice that needs special attention in this recipe is amchur powder. It brings out the bitter taste and makes the chatpata. 😉

For a healthier option – Pakistan can be baked in the oven. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and place the pies in a single layer on a baking tray. Bake them for another 10-12 minutes until they are golden brown. Depending on the temperature of the oven, the cooking time may vary.
