It’s amazing now to think that there was a time when Panda Inn was one of my favorite restaurants. world. I know I’m not alone, when I was little I didn’t think there was anything better than Chinese food. Chicken wrapped in paper, egg rolls, fortune cookies… these are mysterious and delicious things. For the young man, eating at the Panda Inn was as exciting as a trip to the Great Wall of China.

Three things influenced my love for Panda Inn. First, the high school started carrying Panda Express for lunch once a month. I feel like there is very little difference in quality between the two places. (For you non-Southern California readers, the Panda Inn is a sit-down restaurant that opened in Pasadena in the early 1970s. Panda Express, a chain of fast food and convenience stores with more than 1,200 locations worldwide, originated from Panda Inn in the 80s.) The main difference is the price; A meal at Panda Express costs a fraction of the same meal at Panda Inn.
Second, Yang Chow opened a few blocks from Panda Inn when I was a teenager. I preferred everything on the previous one: chicken, chicken salad, and all the food tasted better. The family dinner at Panda Inn, which was his custom, moved to Yang Chow and everyone was fine.
And third, when I was 21, I had my first Chinese lunch in Monterey Park. It’s a culinary revelation. This is how you should taste Chinese food. I started experimenting with dim sum at places all over the San Gabriel Valley. I noticed a lack of diversity in the crowd at Panda Inn. It is not difficult to draw conclusions about the type of Pandi floor. In the two restaurants I visited in Monterey Park, I was the only white person in the house. White chocolate fortune cookies were not on the menu
Years passed and I did not return to the Panda Inn. I had lunch there with my mom about a year ago and thought it was pretty good, though nothing special. (The lunch we both had was very good though.) Just two weeks ago Elizabeth and I stopped in for lunch and were told there was no lunch special that day. We got an appetizer and an entrée and were very disappointed with both. I had no plans to eat at Panda Inn again.

But some of my cousins come down from the Central Coast every summer and sail to Catalina for a week. The night they return, they do the same thing: eat at the Panda Inn and spend the night at my parents’ house before returning home in the morning. Two of my cousins were of an age where I thought the Panda Inn was great. (I had Chinese food with them in Santa Maria years ago; it was the worst Chinese food I’ve had in California. So I’m sure the Panda Inn looks great in comparison.) I’ve never been. -I joined one of those trips to Panda. Inn, but I can this year.
Fourteen of us sat around a large round table in a private room. With the exception of my cousin Ed’s wife June (who was born in China and made the amazing egg rolls I mentioned a few months ago), we are all white. Just like every other table in the house. It was like a Utah Jazz game. We started with appetizers and then ordered several meals in large family portions. There’s a lot of food, so I’ll go through the pictures in a moment.
I usually like a cold Tsingtao with my Chinese food, but I didn’t have beer tonight, so I had my second favorite drink in this situation: hot tea. But both my dad and my cousin had Tsingtaos.
The stickers were surprisingly good. No, they’ll never be mistaken for the near-perfect pot stickers at Luscious Dumplings, but they can be done better. Stickers are usually thin, open cut objects that are not baked on one side. These are very well made. However, hot mustard is hardly spicy. I prefer to clean cavities in Golden China.

Twisting a feather with vegetables is very difficult. Place the vegetables in the packet and fry until covered. The only way you can do any harm is to not bake long enough. And they are good, although comparing them to a June egg roll is like comparing 2012 to the Great Escape. (I just saw 2012 the other day; it’s the worst movie I’ve ever seen, worse than Robin Hood: Men in Tights, which held the record for the past 17 years.)
I’m not a fan of ribs, but I tried the “sesame ribs”. I thought they were too salty and greasy, but take my opinion with a (proverbial) grain of salt; I can feel it in almost every rib.
Shrimp and Potato Croquettes: I’ve never had these at Panda Inn. Honestly, I didn’t even think they were on the menu. But they were great. Prawns in croquettes are usually overcooked in my experience, but these are cooked well.
Lo mein is one of my favorite dishes at any Chinese restaurant and this is no exception.

I tried the “Mongolian beef wok” because it was there, but I found the beef to be very thin. The spicy soy sauce was good, but it was the only flavor of the dish.
My cousin Alex is a vegetarian so he ordered the Spicy Eggplant. I don’t like eggplant and this was one of two dishes I didn’t try that night.
The shrimp kung pao was no different than any kung pao I’ve had. I’ve had a few and they were well cooked, but this dish was completely forgettable.
The surprise of the evening was “sweet and fragrant chicken”. I had sweet and fragrant shrimp two weeks ago and found it to be a boring dish with no taste. However, the chicken is very tasty. It’s a lighter, spicier and tastier version of orange chicken. If I go back to Panda Inn this will be my go to meal.
Making Room At The Top: Andrew And Peggy Cherng
Panda beef is the crispy beef served at most American Chinese restaurants in town, which isn’t the worst thing in the world. But that’s not good either. It is cold and seasoned with garlic, ginger and pepper. I didn’t like the crispy beef at Yujean Kang’s that much, and if I want this dish again, I’d rather go to Panda Express and pay half the price for the “Beijing Chicken”. (Though I don’t see that happening anytime soon.) That being said, I ate a few bites and had no complaints.
“Shrimp in Garlic Sauce” was my favorite dish of the night: tender shrimp
