Nba Conference – The fourth quarter of the 2021-22 NBA regular season has begun. After the All-Star break, rosters take shape and playoff (and playoff) teams prepare for an extended run. With the back-to-back trades between the 76ers and Nets and the coming of multiple deals that included valuable pieces for the Bucks, Cavaliers and Celtics, there was a new Eastern Conference with strength and depth.

The Nets are currently 8th in the Eastern Conference standings behind the Heat, Bulls, 76ers, Bucks, Cavaliers, Celtics and Raptors. The long list of smart teams doesn’t even include the Hornets, who had the ninth-most points in the league at 114.1, and the 10th-ranked Hawks, who were just two wins from the NBA Finals a season ago. In total, 10 of the league’s 15 most effective offensive teams are in the East. The East has an advantage of great teams, and the playoffs and beyond should be very interesting.

The balance of power favoring the East represents, at least in narrative form, a shift from the norm in recent memory. For years it has been a common belief that the West is king and the East is in second place. That sentiment has not been without merit, and as I note below, it would be impossible to dismiss this year’s East as a significant departure from the historical trend. Much of that is the emergence of the Cavaliers and Bulls, perhaps the two most surprising teams in the league this season, as well as the Celtics and Raptors, two of the best NBA teams in 2022. related to their performance. Familiar faces like the Heat, 76ers and Bucks have lived up to expectations as championships, and a fully healthy Brooklyn team is still a force to be reckoned with.

It’s an exciting time for the “back-to-back” East of the league. But what? How can the strength of advice be determined in seasons, decades and generations? How far has the West really dominated the East in recent years? We decided to look at some historical benchmarks to try to find some answers.

The table above tracks All-NBA First Team selections since 1982, organized by conference. Overall, the West has the lead, followed by the East with 123 honors. This gap is mainly due to its dominance in the 21st century, with 70% of selected players coming from the West, including two sweeps in 2000 and 2007, the only such achievement since 1982. The superiority of the West is become clearer lately. Only once since 2013 has more than one Eastern Conference player been selected to the All-NBA First Team. In terms of individual performance, the cream of the crop primarily comes from the Western Conference.

However, the situation may be different in 2022. If the season ended today, DeMar DeRozan, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Joel Embiid would all be on the NBA’s East first team. Embiid has the toughest path of the three, as he’ll have to beat out Nikola Jokic for the center spot or the team’s pick ahead due to some position manipulation. It marks Embiid and DeRozan’s first team honors and the first time in a decade that three players have been selected from the Eastern Conference, indicating that the East has become the East at least through 2021-2022.

Another way to assess the strength of a board is to look at the depth of quality teams. For years, making the playoffs in the East has been seen as more effective than playing in the West because the 7 or 8 seeds in the East usually have worse records than their counterparts in the West. The table above shows that since 2004, 13 teams under .500 have made the playoffs in the East, compared to just 1 in the West (the 2019-2020 Trail Blazers, who made the playoffs at ‘ e bubble came). In contrast, 16 teams in the West finished with a record of .500 or better and missed the playoffs, compared to only 4 in the East. The Rockets and Suns have been particularly vulnerable to the power of the West, each with three seasons since 2004 in which they won more than they lost but have yet to make the playoffs.

Nba Ratings: Conference Finals Still Up Despite Routs

In 2008-09, the Suns finished with a 46-36 record and a net rating of +3.1 points per 100 possessions, but fell two games shy of the 8 seed. For context, that net efficiency number would rank 11th in the league this year, lower than any current playoff team. There would also be a 5 seed in the East that season. Likewise, the 2010-11 Rockets finished the season with a net rating of +2.0 points per 100 possessions, which would have ranked 13th in the league, behind the Nets, Grizzlies, Timberwolves, Lakers and Raptors. Houston finished the season 43-39 and missed the playoffs by 3 games, but would have the 6 seed in the East.

This metric gets a little muddled when the playoffs start, but if you look at the top 8 seeds, there doesn’t seem to be a team under .500 in the East that will end up in that group. The Nets, currently the No. 8 seed, are now on the mend and looking to improve to a 32-31 record heading into the season finale. The No. 7 seed Raptors have played their best basketball of the season over the past few months and will need to drop significantly to see their 34-27 record below .500. In the West, a 4-game winning streak lifts the 8th-seeded Clippers above .500 for the first time since January 1st. It’s a tough road ahead, but with games against the Suns, Warriors, Jazz (2x), Bulls, Sixers and Bucks remaining, stars Kawhi Leonard and Paul George are still on the sidelines.

To determine which conference is more difficult as a team, we compiled every team that has finished with a rating of +5 or better per 100 possessions every season since 2005-06. The West has 40 such teams, a significant advantage over the 28 of the East. As with All-NBA First Team criteria, this discrepancy has become more apparent in recent years. As of 2012-13, the West had 25 of those teams, compared to just 12 in the East.

So far, there are four teams in this category in 2021-2022: the Suns, Warriors, Jazz and Celtics. The Celtics made the cut thanks to their incredible net efficiency, which could see them earn +12 points per 100 possessions in the 2022 calendar year. However, with 3 of 4 teams, the West may not be ready to give up its crown as the division’s top conference.

Time For A Shakeup In The Nba

An interesting note in the table above: 11 of the 16 champions from 2006 to 2021 fall into the +5 net efficiency category or better. My favorite teams are the 2021 Bucks, 2020 Lakers, 2016 Cavaliers, 2010 Lakers, and 2006 Heat. The Suns, Warriors, Jazz or Celtics could make it 17 to 12, another team would come in and win it all, or the 2022 champion is not among the top few. year will show. the most effective teams in the regular season.
