Welcome to Blue Corn, a year-old restaurant at Perkins Road and Essen Lane that’s turning heads and bar how we enjoy authentic Mexican food in Baton Rouge.
The restaurant is a dream come true for local entrepreneur Carlos Salazar, who wants to introduce the capital to Central Mexican cuisine. On the menu, Salazar features some of the family recipes she grew up with her mother.
Blue corn food is accessible and fun. Conservative palates will be satisfied, but visitors who love something new will be satisfied. For example, there are the fresh and delicious gualajillo nopales: orange and vegetable cactus topped with dried guajillo peppers, onions and cilantro. If you like ceviche, try its sister dish: aguachile. Blue corn fresh shrimp cured in lime juice and served in a clamato dip, mild onions and marinated serrano peppers. Chilaquiles Rojo with Cecina is an addictive traditional breakfast dish. Layers of tortilla chips are topped with homemade tomato and serrano salsa and topped with queso fresco and Mexican crema.
Finally, don’t miss your chance to sink your teeth into the Blue Corn Taco menu. Loyal fans of tongue, (yes, tongue), will be delighted to find their favorite lengua tacos here, soft and fluffy and topped with just chopped onion and cilantro. Other can’t-miss options are cochinita pibil with earthy achiote-crusted pork and habanero sauce, and tinga: fried chicken with queso and chipotle cream.
Fast Break: Margaritas And Modern Mexican At The New Blue Corn Tequila & Tacos
The bar is a testament to the high experience at Blue Corn. Margaritas and mojitos are homemade and can be customized to your favorite flavor profile. The bar menu offers several mezcal-based craft cocktails, and you can also order a tequila flight featuring more than ten different high-end tequilas.
The reception to Blue Core has been so strong, the restaurant is already planning to expand. Opening next year, Blue Corn will be a freestanding restaurant located in the back of the downtown Electric Depot development.

Los Reyes, the new Tex-Mex restaurant from co-founder Abhasa, has taken over the old Las Palmas space at 11333 Coursey Boulevard.

Nasa Diak, founder of the local Greek and Lebanese clothing chain, co-owns Los Reyes with Kevin Saleh. Dyke said the goal in the new restaurant is to go bold with taste, look and feel.
“I love the area,” Diak said. “We wanted to try. Being in the restaurant business for a long time, we tried to adjust some of the menu items.”
Los Reyes offers not only traditional items like fajitas, enchiladas, and burritos, but also several dishes with a Middle Eastern flavor. Some items include Hummus Picante, Queso Frito with Black Olives and Tacos de Gyros.
The restaurant officially opened on Friday. Working hours are 10:30 AM to 11:00 AM. Friday, and 10:30 to 21:00. week. Weekend hours for the party crowd may soon be expanded.
It’s A Small World
The restoration and opening process of the dike took longer than expected due to last year’s flooding. Dyke also added a terrace area with seating and a water fountain to the restaurant. There, Los Reyes offers live music.
“People in Baton Rouge don’t just go out to eat,” he said. “They’re going to party all night.”
Diack’s long-term goal is to expand the concept and possibly open more locations. However, he knows about the many Tex Mex restaurants in town.
“There are many Mexican and Lebanese restaurants here. “With a Lebanese restaurant, you can have one more place on every corner. This measurement concept is different. El Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant

Owner Ozzie Fernandez is known around Baton Rouge for his popular restaurants Izzo’s Illegal Burrito, Lit Pizza and Rocca Pizzeria. But the new opening, Modesto, debuts this Friday, Sept. 11, at South Gate Village Shopping Center on Burbank Drive — and it might be the most personal yet.
Fernandez’s parents are from Mexico and he spent a lot of time there when he was young. Ever since he was a child, he wanted to bring the authentic taste of food to Baton Rouge.
The menu includes dishes influenced by Fernandez’s mother and grandmother, as well as some original recipes that Fernandez encountered during his travels.
Cinco De Mayo Restaurant Specials In Baton Rouge
“Tex-Mex is very popular,” Fernandez said, “but we do a lot of the food I grew up with.”
This includes a taco menu with varieties such as al pastor or spit-roasted pork; the tender beef known as barbacoa; and brisket birria, a taco dipped in beef.
Appetizers include queso fundido and campechana, a Mexican-style seafood cocktail with Gulf shrimp and crabmeat in a tomato cocktail with salsa cruda, avocado and totopos. Diners can try a pozole-style soup as well as Modestone ilotus or street corn. And you can round off the meal with tres leches, white chocolate bread pudding or gelato from the dessert department.
Food isn’t the only thing that sets Modesto apart. Whiskey is part of the restaurant’s name, Fernandez says, because the new location will not only have good tequila, but a wide line of whiskey as well.
Caliente Mexican Craving
Many cocktails have a fresh and unique taste. The house margarita, made with El Jimador silver, Cointreau, lime and agave, is expected to be a big hit, Fernandez said.
The Mango Con Chili cocktail packs a punch with mezcal, El Jimador tequila, mango, honey, lime and chile spices.
The drinks are not only fresh juice, but the salt that covers the sides of the drink has a special taste to complement the cocktail.
