Macbook Pro 15 Inch 2020

Macbook Pro 15 Inch 2020 – The new Dell XPS 15 9500 and 16-inch MacBook Pro are arguably the two best large-screen laptops of 2020. Is there a winner? Read on.

Review Background: This is intended as a short, quick-read comparison and review. I’ve had the MacBook Pro 16-inch for about eight months and the Dell XPS 15 9500 for a few days, but I’ve been using it constantly for the past 72+ hours.

Let me address the elephant in the room first. Both of these laptops are heavy. If you’re on the go a lot (like me), these aren’t your first choice.

My 13-inch Dell XPS 13 9300 or HP Elite Dragonfly backpack is light enough for long-distance transport (eg long trips through airports).

Light enough for frequent long trips or road trips. Not backwards, but again too heavy to toss around and too heavy to pull out of the bag again and again while on the go.

Apart from large screens, this is why consumers and professionals buy large screen laptops. The XPS 15 9500, for example, has Intel’s latest high-end 10th generation Intel Core i7-10875H (8-core) along with the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Ti. For someone who tests and uses almost exclusively 13-inch laptops, the 9500 is incredibly (and refreshingly) fast, crushing any task you throw at it. It can be addictive.

The 16-inch MacBook Pro is the same. After using the MBP 16, I could never go back to the MacBook Air. Too painful.

Both screens are beautiful and bright (see table above). With that out of the way, let’s talk about screen real estate. The simple truth is that big screens are better than small screens. So are large-screen smartphones from Apple and Samsung and the general boom in large-screen phones.

Neither laptop has excellent battery life, but the MBP 16 and Dell XPS 9500 last a while. If I’m careful with screen brightness and keep watching movies to a minimum (I’m not a gamer), they can make it through a flight from Los Angeles to New York—and beyond. So if you keep a close eye on what you’re doing, you can probably squeeze a full day out of either laptop.

Apple Macbook Pro 13 Inch (2020) Review

Had Dell released the redesigned XPS 15 before the 16-inch MacBook Pro came out in November 2019, Dell would have been a clear winner over the previous 15.4-inch MBP. The problem is that the 16-inch MacBook Pro is arguably Apple’s best laptop right now.

Despite having a larger screen, the MBP 16 is lighter than my XPS 9500 model with its larger 86 watt-hour battery.

Where Dell beats Apple, it wins. The Dell has a faster Intel processor, faster graphics and a higher resolution screen than the MBP 16 (see table above).

That said, I generally favor the MBP 16 because Apple delivers a larger screen and wider chassis than the Dell, but at a lower weight. And that means better weight distribution – which also makes the MBP 16 feel lighter.

Both laptops are a tour de force of technology with great aesthetics and thoughtful designs, and I can recommend both. Some users may prefer the Dell because of the extra horsepower at a lower price.

A hypothetical 14.9-inch laptop weighing 3.5 pounds (give or take a tenth of a pound) would be the perfect road warrior. The extra screen real estate and processing power was worth the extra weight compared to a 13-inch laptop.

I have yet to come across a good laptop with a large screen that I can take on long road trips. It’s something for these companies to think about because, like smartphones, I think many consumers want larger screens on laptops. Apple plans to release new MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models with scissor keyboards in the second quarter of 2020, according to a new research note today from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, obtained by .

Kuo did not comment on the size of the new MacBook Pro, but he may be referring to the 14-inch model he previously mentioned since the 16-inch MacBook Pro was released just four months ago. The new 14-inch model would likely replace the 13-inch MacBook Pro, which would have been discontinued.

Kuo expects the new MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models to have different cost optimizations, but he said users won’t notice any difference.

The current 13-inch MacBook Pro and MacBook Air are still equipped with butterfly keyboards that can suffer from issues such as sticky or unresponsive keys after prolonged use, prompting Apple to start a free worldwide repair program in 2018. Apple resolved finally this problem by returning to the scissor mechanism with the new Magic Keyboard on the 16-inch MacBook Pro, which has proven to be much more reliable.

Kuo himself offered praise for the 16-inch MacBook Pro, noting that customer response to the notebook was better than expected.

Regarding the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, Kuo believes that operations at MacBook-related suppliers will improve significantly from the end of March, paving the way for mass production of the new MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models.
