Kevin Love – LOS ANGELES — Kevin Love was relatively new to the Cleveland Cavaliers in February 2015 and still struggling to find his place within the team’s offense when one of his most highly regarded teammates, LeBron James, took to Twitter to deliver a message.
At the time, James told reporters he wasn’t directing the message to anyone in particular. But he appears to be targeting Love, who has expressed frustration with his limited role after spending several seasons as the unquestioned alpha with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The Cavaliers, of course, eventually got it together and won their first N.B.A. Championship in 2016. By then Love had grown accustomed to operating in James’s massive shadow.

Now in his sixth season with the Cavaliers, Love is again struggling with fit — but for different reasons. As a 31-year-old veteran on a youthful LeBron-less team, he knows his presence doesn’t mean much. They want to win, but the Cavaliers are in a long rebuild.

One of the more interesting questions ahead of the league’s Feb. 6 trade deadline is whether the team can find a new hire for Love. Complicating matters: He’s in the first year of a four-year, $120 million contract extension he signed before the start of last season.
Those days are gone though. Love missed most of last season with injuries, and the Cavaliers went 12-29 against the Lakers and Clippers this week. Cleveland’s future lies in the development of first- and second-year players Darius Garland and Collin Sexton. should be

“I don’t know what the next few weeks are going to be,” Love told reporters earlier this month, referring to the trade deadline. “It’s a frustrating situation, and I know this is a rebuilding team and I want to be young. I accept that.”
The problem is that Love’s contract is difficult, if not impossible, for the Cavaliers to move. He is set to make $29 million at age 34 in the 2022-23 season. Few teams have the financial flexibility to absorb that type of deal in the first place, and they must be willing to commit to an aging player with an injury history. No one could blame Love for taking the millions when he was given the extension, but now they’re stuck with each other — for now, not forever.
“More than anything, he’s amazing,” Cavaliers first-year coach John Beilein said. “Obviously, he’s had a rough day or two.”
Love’s desperation has occasionally surfaced in the public eye. His blowout came on the bench in a loss against the Toronto Raptors on December 31. (He scored in a folding chair.) He scored on January 4 against the Oklahoma City Thunder. At one point, he threw a pass toward a teammate.)
Nba Rumors: Kevin Love Not That Available Anymore?
A few days later, Love expressed his regret to reporters in Cleveland, saying he acted “like a 13-year-old.” After revealing her struggles with anxiety, Preethi, an advocate for mental health, vowed to try to be a better leader and keep her emotions in check.
“I don’t care if I’m here five more months or five more weeks,” Love said, “I’m going to get the best out of these guys and the coaching staff.”
At the same time, the Cavaliers have shown signs of improvement, albeit incremental. They beat the Pistons and Nuggets on the road last week. On Monday, he led the Lakers with 14 points before succumbing to James’ usual brilliance in a 128-99 loss.
Her relationship with James has developed and matured over the years, going so far as to describe Love as a “brother for life”. Love said there were moments during Monday’s game when he heard James calling the Cavaliers’ offensive sets.
Kevin Love Gives His Thoughts On Evan Mobley Not Getting Roty
“Just a cerebral guy,” Love said. “Even if he’s a quarter-step slower or whatever you want to say, I think that’s going to allow him to grow every year. He’s just continued to get better.”
As for his own situation, Love said he was encouraged by his team’s recent performance. Their next game is Friday in Memphis against the 19-22 Grizzlies.

New superstar Evan Mobley came off the bench to allow Love full playing time this season. Along with Ricky Rubio and Sedi Osman, Love made an almost immediate impact and was a key factor in leading Cleveland to a playoff spot. It’s a win for Love on a personal level as he’s only missed eight games this season due to Covid-19. That’s the number of games Love has missed in a Cavaliers uniform since the 2015-16 season. It’s another season of constant rumors and drama. Worst year of his career. But Love is here — even if he doesn’t say exactly where he wants to be — and promises to get a better attitude.
“Keeping my head down, staying calm and talking about my job,” Love said at the team’s annual media day on Monday, adding that the buyout never came. I think this is conjecture.
