Now the page is archived, but we live very much on .org. Many thanks to Nate Hoffelder of for collaborating on a preservation project with will soon bring the Android Play Store to Chromebooks. Some Chromebook users are introduced. New possibilities already.

Android apps in Chrome OS may already be a thing, but there aren’t very many available on the Chrome Web Store. However, that is likely to change soon as the search giant appears to be opening up. Launch the Play Store on Chrome OS as shown in the new screenshot shared on Reddit.

They first discovered a new option in Chrome OS called “Open Android apps to run on your Chromebook”. It appeared in OS Developer (version 51) and allowed other Reddit users to follow the instructions (shown above) on how to set things up before disabling it. Upon closer inspection, the Chromium code contains some references to the most notable features:

Choose from over a million apps and games on Google Play to install and use on $ 1 Chromebook .

The appearance of this option came as no surprise, as Google has spent the last few years bringing Android and Chrome OS closer together. In late 2015, the Wall Street Journal reported that the company would merge the two operating systems earlier that year. If today’s news was anything to go by, maybe Google would just add useful features from each operating system instead.

With Google I/O less than a month away, it’s likely that Google will suspend its project specifications for Android and Chrome OS. We’ve reached out to the company for comment and will update this article if we hear back.

Android apps and Play Store coming to Chrome OS this year, better offline functionality and more to make Chrome OS more powerful.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai took control of Android in early 2013, putting him in charge of both Chrome and the company’s mobile operating system. Since then, there have been rumors that Google will look at merging its two different operating systems into a single merger. They gained steam last fall, and in fact, Google has finally revealed a closer relationship between Chrome OS and Android. But that doesn’t mean Chrome OS is going away. The opposite is true: This year, Google’s browser-based operating system will be compatible with millions of Android apps available in the Google Play Store. The company accidentally revealed its plans yesterday, but an episode this morning at Google I/O made it official.

When the update rolls out later this year, Google will address two of the biggest issues facing Chrome OS at the same time. “Many users want more apps and better offline capabilities,” said Kan Liu, Chrome’s senior product director. “We’ve figured out the right way to bring it to end users, and it shows that we have a great app ecosystem in the Play Store.” These apps will enable stronger offline capabilities, which could significantly change the way people work with Chromebooks.

“We’ve spent a lot of time and good progress on launching offline for Chromebooks based on websites,” Liu explains, “but this website is basically not designed for offline.” Although most of our smartphones have internet access, most apps are also designed to run offline in a way that web applications cannot replicate. “When you design for Android, you have to think offline,” added Liu. Everything from music, videos, photos, games and files benefit from more robust offline functionality. Some work without internet before, but not to the extent they want when the Play Store arrives. Liu says, “We tried to get developers to prioritize it [for Chrome] because users are asking for it, but developers didn’t think about it.

Google is doing as much as possible to make it feel like the original software. It’s not available yet, but eventually you’ll be able to grab the Android app from one corner and stretch and resize it however you want, with content adjusted to that size. But for now, you can only run it on their vertical phone or larger horizontal tablet profile. But most of what I saw felt perfectly native: notifications filtered into standard Chrome notification areas, and the common design language across Google means most Android apps fit it.

Más Fácil Que Nunca Desde El Pc: Instala Apps En Tu Tablet O Chromebook Desde La Google Play Store

The obvious question is, why bother running Android apps on Chrome when you can just run them on a native Android device? Well, classic notebooks still have a lot of productivity advantages over tablets. “The big difference between a tablet and a Chromebook is the dashboard, which makes things more precise and easier,” says Liu. Using the mouse to edit files. “And because it’s a Chromebook, we have a full PC browser.” Split-screen multitasking in Android N certainly helps, but the multitasking experience still lacks what laptops can offer. Along with the stability of Chrome itself, it will continue to benefit Chromebooks on tablets when it comes to high productivity.

As with most Google products, it will be a while before users can take advantage of the Play Store on their Chromebooks. Google is announcing an initiative today to start allowing developers to consider their PC operating system when updating their software. It will be available in the next developer channel release and will only run on a limited number of devices: last year’s Chromebook Pixel, ASUS Chromebook Flip and more. Touchscreen will be the initial requirement, but that restriction will be lifted when the Play Store is released. It must happen before the end of the year.

If you’re a Chrome OS fan, it’s hard not to get excited about what Google is doing here, but it’s also worth remembering that the success of Google Play on Chrome depends on the developers. The big knock against the Android tablet is less about the hardware and more about the quality of the app. Developers aren’t focused on creating apps for the big screen with the same fun that iOS developers are: Android tablets always want to think backwards.

To prevent this from happening with Chrome OS, developers should consider creating profile factors. History says it won’t happen at the level you want it to. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that things will be different this time though. The rise of Chromebook users means there is a huge new market for Play apps. Hopefully the developers will accept the profile factor. More users is always a good thing and more apps are really good for Chromebook fans.
