Android and iOS have their pros and cons, but with Google’s sometimes questionable privacy practices (as opposed to Apple’s constant commitment to protecting user data), some may find the move a no-brainer.

If you’ve been tempted to switch from Android to iPhone for a while now, but don’t know where to start, you’re not alone. At first, it might seem like a rather difficult task since the two operating systems don’t get along well, but it’s actually easier than you think.

How To Switch From Android To Iphone

Before we begin the actual data transfer, we need to take care of a few tasks. Ideally, you’ll start the process with a brand new (or factory reset) iPhone. While you can transfer data from Android to an iPhone that’s already set up, it’s much easier to do so with a new (or factory reset) iPhone. However, if you already have data on your iPhone and don’t want to lose it, we’ll show you how to transfer data to Android without having to reset your iPhone later.

On your Android phone, open the Google Play Store and download Apple’s Move to iOS app. Once downloaded, open the Move to iOS app, follow the prompts and accept the terms and conditions to continue, then tap Next at the top right of the Find Your Code screen.

On your iPhone’s Settings screen, click “Apps & Data,” then tap “Move Android Data” and wait for a six- or ten-digit code to appear. Re-enter the code from your iPhone to your Android device and wait for the data transfer screen to appear.

On your Android phone, select which data you want to copy to your iPhone. You can choose to copy to any of the following: contacts, text messages, photos, videos, Chrome bookmarks, email accounts, and calendars. Some of your apps may also be downloaded if they are free and available on the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. For others, unfortunately, you’ll have to find and download them again in the App Store.

Once you’ve selected the content you want to transfer, you may need to wait a while for the data to finish downloading to your new device, so it’s worth keeping both devices connected to their respective chargers until the process is complete.

When the download is complete, tap “Done” on your Android and then “Continue” on your iPhone. Follow the instructions to complete the iPhone setup and you’ll be good to go. However, music, books or PDF files may need to be transferred manually – you’ll need to download the Android File Transfer app for Mac and follow the instructions to move these files to your new device.

If you’ve already set up your iPhone and don’t want to reset it, or if you’re having trouble using the Move to iOS app, you have a few other options. However, the process above is the easiest way to transfer data, so we recommend that you simply sync your iPhone data with your Apple ID, factory reset your device, and follow the steps above. When you sign in again with your Apple ID, your photos, messages, and other content should come back.

Although neither Apple nor Android supports or endorses them, there are some third-party apps that can help. A quick search of the Google Play Store turns up hundreds of such apps that work in a similar way to the Move to iOS app without having to reset your iPhone. Just be aware that these apps may not be able to transfer all of your data, so some files and content may need to be transferred manually.

Speaking of manual downloads… I know it’s 2010, but iTunes is still alive and well and could be just the solution you’re looking for. If you’re using a Mac, you’ll also need the Android File Transfer app. Here’s a step-by-step guide to downloading content from iTunes.

And that’s it – your photos, music, videos, books and other documents should now be on your iPhone. Unfortunately, it is not possible to sync text messages, contacts, mail and calendars through iTunes. It’s easy to sync contacts, mail, and calendars if you use an online service like Gmail or Outlook. If you want to copy your messages, you’ll need to try a third-party app or jailbreak and factory reset your iPhone to go through the setup process again.
