The Celtics got some much-anticipated relief from Danilo Gallinari’s season-ending ACL injury when the league offered the disabled player $3.29 million. Shams Charania of Nhandare was the first to talk about DPE.

The 33-year-old Gallinari was expected to be the top point guard for the Celtics in the 2022-2023 season after the team signed a two-year mid-level tax deal this summer. However, Gallinari suffered a torn ACL over the summer while playing for Italy during the Eurocup which ended before his year even started. Boston filed for DPE shortly after Gallinari’s injury.

The DPE is exempt from the salary limit like any other exception (middle class, etc.). Teams can sign up for it if they believe a player is out for the season and need help spending replacement money. Boston got it right with Gordon Hayward back in 2017.

Any team can apply for DPE until January 15 of the NGA calendar year. An independent medical examiner, approved by the league, submits the player’s medical information.

While the DPE item is being offered to the team, the return is not expected to be huge, at least on the trade market as it is only worth half of Gallinari’s salary ($3.3 million). The full DPE can be used on a player whose contract expires via trade) or used on a one-year contract in free agency or requesting a player via waiver (if the player is on a one-year contract). The offer must be used by March 10 to be used.

The Celtics already have a whopping $3.3 million in trades. One (Dennis Schroder) is worth $5.9 million and ends during the trade in February. The max (Juancho Hernangomez) is worth $6.9 million and ends on January 19th. For that reason, it is impossible that they use Gallinari DPE instead of trading.

Rumor: T.j. Warren And Danilo Gallinari Among Possible Celtics Targets

Instead, where the DPE can ultimately be more useful is on the free agent market or buyout after the trade deadline. Boston had spent all of their mid-level money on Gallinari but their DPE allows them to offer a free agent more money than the player’s minimum. This could help Boston secure a title that many other contenders are in the market for, especially if these teams have less money to offer.

For now, the Celtics will likely stick with their current roster as they will need to open up space at 15 men to use DPE. When the league’s travel plan begins later this winter, this will be another tool that Brad Stevens can use to improve this team.

Hawks’ Danilo Gallinari will miss two weeks with a sprained ankle Gallinari was injured Thursday against the Nets.

Danilo Gallinari Is The Perfect Free Agency Signing For The Boston Celtics

The new-look Atlanta Hawks are off to a strong start this season, sitting in the race for second place in the Eastern Conference at 4-2. Fortunately, they hit the road on Saturday. Not only did they lose a nail-biter to the Cleveland Cavaliers, but they learned that they will be without Danilo Gallinari for almost two weeks due to a broken ankle.

In a press release, the Hawks announced that Gallinari underwent an MRI that “confirmed a right ankle fracture as well as swelling and inflammation” and will be reevaluated in two weeks.

The injury occurred in the first quarter of the Hawks’ Thursday night win over the Nets, when Gallinari collided with Kyrie Irving. As the two fought back, Irving’s knee hit the back of Gallinari’s leg, causing his leg to twist. Gallinari left the game and did not return.

In fact, this is more of a relief for Gallinari and the Hawks. This was a bad collision, and could have been worse if his knee had been bent as well. As it is, this seems like it will be more of a problem than any kind of long-term problems, and Gallinari should be able to come back without too much trouble.

However, this is not how Gallinari would like to start his reign in Atlanta. He had already missed a few games with a foot injury before returning against the Nets, and now he will be back on the sidelines. In the full season he played, he posted 13 points, four rebounds and three assists and seemed to fit right into the Hawks’ offensive system.

Through six games, the Hawks are averaging 116.7 points per 100 possessions, which is second-most offensively in the league, behind only the Milwaukee Bucks. What they did, mostly without Gallinari, shows how powerful their offense is with Trae Young leading the way. Danilo Gallinari was first injured in a World Cup Qualifier match for the Italian national team. What he feared was a torn meniscus that would keep him out for a few months has now been confirmed as a torn ACL, according to the report.

First of all, this is a huge blow to Gallinari who was excited to join the Celtics after wanting to join the team at various times. In his first meeting, he talked about how this was a dream come true, and now at the age of 34, the ACL has been torn again.

Gallinari injured his knee in what looked like a strange qualifying match, but there was plenty of hope that it wasn’t as bad as it looked. Early reports indicated that his wounds were fully healed. Charania later said that the Celtics recently conducted more detailed tests, resulting in a full evaluation of the torn ACL. The timing isn’t ideal since we’re so close to training camp, but it leaves the door open for a potential return at the end of the season.

ACL injuries have a recovery time of 6-12 months. While Gallinari’s high profile in his career presents challenges, it’s unlikely he’ll see the bottom near the end of the regular season. It’s not impossible, but it’s not incredible.

Report: Celtics To Sign Danilo Gallinari

Until then, Sam Hauser comes into focus as a player who will now get more opportunities. Boston can now look to apply for a Disabled Player Exception or find a veteran to get additional insurance for that position. Heading into the season, the Celtics will have time to adjust their rotation and strategy without Gallinari for the foreseeable future.

This is a big blow for the Boston Celtics, but the depth this season (on paper) makes the team better for this type of injury compared to last year. The Celtics have about 4 weeks left to finalize their training camp roster and prepare for Gallinari’s absence.ATLANTA, GA – MARCH 03: Danilo Gallinari #8 of the Atlanta Hawks drives to the basket in the first period against the Chicago Bulls at State Farm. The Atlanta Hawks (31-32) have won two in a row thanks in large part to the efforts of Danilo Gallinari. Their 117-114 win over Washington put them 2.5 games up on the Wizards for the final playoff spot but they got an extra bump due to winning by the same percentage as the Charlotte Hornets going into the night.

They sit in ninth place in the Eastern Conference with a chance at a .500 record for the first time since Dec. 15 with a win over the two-game winning streak Detroit Pistons.
