When BYU Basketball fans think of the best players of the past decade, players like Jimmer Fredette, Kyle Collinsworth, Tyler and TJ Haws and Yoeli Childs come to mind. Behind those players is a second tier with players including Elijah Bryant, Eric Mika, Nate Austin, Charles Abou and Zac Seljaas.

Elijah Bryant To Sign Two Year Deal With Bucks

But in this entire list, only one of them deserves an NBA jersey this season. Elijah Bryant. In fact, he was just signed by the Milwaukee Bucks in a 3-year contract and bought from the Israeli team Maccabi Tel Aviv for $500,000. Granted, half a million dollars isn’t crazy in the NBA, but it would send a message that Bryant was the guy they wanted and were willing to pay the price.

In his first game Monday night, Bryant had 16 points, six rebounds, three assists and a block. Its highlights are below:

This is great news for Elijah Bryant and I hope he has a long and successful career with the Bucks or whatever NBA team he plays for. But that leaves one big question, how and why?

Elijah Bryant Turns Down Bucks’ Offer To Remain With Maccabi Tel Aviv

Again, nothing against Bryant, but we’ve all seen, “You get $10, make a team,” and then there’s a list of $5 players, $4 players, $3 players, and so on. While at BYU, Bryant would have been a $3, maybe $4 player, and Jimmer, Collinsworth and Childs are obviously higher than $5. Yet it was Bryant who scored 16 points in the season finale while everyone else was playing overseas, or not at all. Nothing against playing overseas, but it’s not the NBA.

And this is not only basketball. Check out Michael Davis and the Los Angeles Chargers. Davis hasn’t even started his senior year at BYU, but he’s now locked in the NFL. This is the beauty of sports. A player may not have the success they want in high school or college. But with the right program and the right need, they can achieve great success at the next level.

To all of you high school athletes out there not getting the success you want but struggling. Maybe you just want a good cut and you need to be ready when the opportunity arises. General managers of professional basketball teams would be wise to keep Elijah Bryant’s number in their digital Rolodexes.

In 2020, Bryant helped lead Maccabi Tel Aviv to the Israeli league title. Last year, he was included in the Milwaukee Bucks team that won the 2021 National Basketball Association. And this year, he was a key contributor to Anadolu Efes during the Turkish team’s successful run to the Euroleague.

Back-to-back NBA/EuroLeague titles mean a lot to the former Brigham Young University star. They are widely regarded as the two most competitive basketball teams in the world.

But even as Bryant established his “brand” as an on-court winner, his growing international following increasingly recognized his deep religious beliefs. The athletic, 6-foot-5 gardener often uses Twitter and other social media to share his favorite scriptures and quotes from Latter-day Saint leaders.

Here is a reassuring quote from Elder Jorge T. Becerra, General Authority of the Seventy, which Bryant tweeted on June 17: “In each church and branch, we need everyone—those who may be strong and those who may be struggling. All are necessary. “

A few days earlier, he had tweeted a famous verse from the Book of Mormon: “When you have worked for your people a whole year, you will only be in the service of your God” (Mosiah 2:17).

While other elite athletes may shy away from revealing their spiritual side, Bryant has no such inhibitions. He believes his running skills are a gift from God – and he unapologetically uses any platform related to those skills to share the restored gospel and lead people to Christ.

“I read the scriptures and talks [at general conference] almost every day — so why not share with my followers what I’m learning and what brings me joy,” he told Church News.

Such tweets or Instagram messages can make him a target for criticism. Some fans told him to “focus on basketball.”

“But my main goal in life,” he replies, “is to return to my Savior.” For me, basketball is nothing compared to my faith and my family. “

Even Bryant’s Twitter avatar is a picture of a basketball player wearing a church logo. “Because this is the shirt I always wear, no matter where or how I play.”

It also helps Bryant to keep writing scriptures and quotes from church leaders to keep himself accountable so he can read the inspired words of past and present leaders every day. And it’s fun to be a missionary.

He said: “We need to share things [with gospel content] with the people who follow me so that I can remind them to read their scriptures every day. “I have my good days and my bad days. Sometimes I miss a day [of the gospel lesson]. But [social media] keeps me accountable and makes people see who I am.

“I hope this is an example that shows kids and others that you can have strong faith and be a good player.”

Bryant played in several countries during his professional basketball career. He knows that not all of his fans and followers speak English. “But maybe they will Google what I post on Twitter. That may be their last encounter with the gospel. … But maybe one day they will have a chance to meet the missionaries. I don’t want to leave anything to chance. I want to share the gospel as much as I can.”

Last year, Sunday News caught up with Bryant shortly after he won an NBA title with the Milwaukee Bucks. Soon after, he found himself out of the NBA. It was a difficult time. Difficult decisions had to be made. But he trusted his skills, trusted in the Lord, got the support of his wife, Jenelle, and soon found himself in the jersey of one of the best teams in Europe, Anadolu Efes from Turkey.

“It just goes to show that when you sacrifice yourself for something you truly believe in – and put your heart and faith and hard work into it – great things can be achieved.”

Last year, he added, “It’s definitely been a testament. … It’s been humbling to see the success and recognition I’ve received, but I’m definitely ready to achieve more.”
