His team reached the Elite Eight in the NCAA tournament. During the tournamt, it is not decided whether it will return for the fifth season, so the NCAA siors are free after the eligibility rules. In the end, he decided to come back and play for another season.

A lot of it is about division and maintaining healthy boundaries. James, then a sophomore at the University of Michigan, Eli Brooks, knew his college coach, not his high school classmate. And boy does he know he gets enough basketball talk every day. So, the couple focuses on other topics – food, schoolwork – when they meet or talk on the phone.

“Last year, they didn’t want me to mention anything (about the Michigan game),” James Brooks said last week. “Because things are not always good.”

After not starting a game his sophomore year, he missed five starts this season in Michigan basketball due to injury. The Spring Grove graduate averaged just under 11 points per game with four rebounds, two assists and one steal in 32 minutes per game. He averaged 11.5 minutes per game in his first two years.

The 6-foot-1 guard has more than doubled his scoring totals from his first two seasons this year, and posted career highs in field goal percentage (41%) and 3-point shooting percentage (36%).

So while James didn’t stop the game with Eli, he said he tried to stay positive. However, Eli is a bit against this idea.

“The only thing that really says is free spending. At the beginning of the year, he took like 66%,” said Eli, who is now up to 73% of the charity stripes. “After every game it’s like, ‘You missed two more free throws.'”

Regardless, the younger Brooks clearly made big strides in a collegiate career that featured a personal setback over his first two years.

But after a 13-point loss to No. 9 Maryland on Saturday, Brooks continued to talk about his year’s performance. He knows there is still room for improvement. He knows he can be more consistent on offense.

Brooks will undoubtedly play a lot this postseason, but Michigan faces a tough challenge after reaching the NCAA Championship game and the Sweet 16 two seasons ago. The Wolverines went 19-12 in the regular season and finished in ninth place in a brutal Big Ten. They will face Rutgers in the first round of the conference tournament at noon in Chicago.

Michigan still needs to make the NCAA Tournament, though it could be a lower seed than the past two seasons. ESPN’s Joe Lunardi has the Wolverines as No. 6 in the final rankings.

“I remember freshman year looking for a year recap (video) and didn’t see it there (in the spotlight),” Brooks said. “I think it’s a big motivation for me to be able to help the team on the field rather than having fun.”

The departure of longtime Wolverines head coach John Beilein has to do with a lack of playing time over the past two years.

“I think everybody’s a little skeptical (of the future) because it’s unknown. But everybody’s staying and everybody’s buying in,” Brooks said.

After Beilein left the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers head coaching job (he resigned after 54 games), Michigan hired Wolverines legend Juwan Howard to take the top job last May. Howard He was part of Michigan’s legendary “Fab Five” lineup in the early 1990s and played 19 years in the NBA.

Coaching changes are often very stressful for college athletes. The new staff has caused uncertainty as they have yet to recruit players.

But Brooks’ situation spoke to his parents a few years ago when he looked at the school.

“As a family, we talked about picking from the coaching staff when we picked Michigan,” James Brooks said. “We talked about whether he can live there and see the academics. And if something changes, is it just going to open for the next school? It’s one of the things on the checklist. “We said you should be happy. with school’.

“As such, they’ve got a good pick (in Howard) to be a champion.”

After spending the summer of his freshman year at Spring Grove, Eli stayed at Michigan last summer to train and get to know the new coaching staff.

Howard praised him for preaching a “family” mentality and keeping the team going through a high-profile season. And he said he was happy to know the former head coach of St. Joseph and Michigan’s new assistant Phil Martelli, who called him “a player, really smart and really smart.”

He and his father said the biggest difference in his performance this year was staying on the court longer to solve problems. He has struggled with his shots each of the past two years and his confidence has suffered from spending time on the bench.

Brooks is still up and down offensively this season. He scored 24 points on opening night at Appalachian State, then didn’t score more than 10 in the next four games. Then he dropped 24 against North Carolina – a huge confidence boost – and hit doubles 13 times in 30 games, including a high of 25 in the loss to Iowa. He played a lot of games, only collecting two or four points.

“I think the biggest thing is that he has to get on the court to be successful,” James said. “And to go through the slump, it still believes. The coaching staff has done a great job.”

Eli added: “I’m just about playing more alive (the game). And seeing the ball play with people and not just about physical activity.”

However, if a player doesn’t score, there has to be a reason to stay on the field, and Brooks’ reason is defense. In the year He missed Michigan’s February 27 game against Wisconsin with a broken nose, and Howard called the presence of the defense “huge” after losing seven points.

“He’s our anchor,” Howard said in last night’s postgame news conference. “We’ve seen how we’ve missed his presence, his movement. We’ve missed his energy, the ability to guard men, the ability to pay attention to the scouting report. The man is the Swiss Army knife.”

Brooks wore a mask after returning to the court after missing just one game. “It’s not too bad,” he said wearing a suit because of the carvings on his face.

But most families have at least one, and they don’t mind if they have something.
