One visitor said: “Very basic and in need of a major upgrade. Narrow shower with clinging shower curtain and thermostat that sends hot and cold water alternately. Can burn! Lights don’t work and decor doesn’t enhance your stay.”

One of Edinburgh’s most visited hotels – right on Princes Street – you might expect this premier inn to be high on the list based on amenities alone. However, some TripAdvisor reviewers expressed displeasure after finding themselves housed in a basement room.

A visitor said: “Premier Inn Princes St is a reasonably priced hotel in a good location. My main problem with this hotel is that if you don’t book a specific room type, you may be allocated a room below street level. There is no natural light from the window. Customers have asked about this situation when they booked. Wasn’t informed and it was very unsatisfactory. I found the experience very crowded and would not recommend staying in one of these rooms.”

All reviewers agree, this premier inn’s location, especially for those interested in heading to Arthur’s Seat. However, some raised issues with the service – with one stating that the hotel was “very well managed”.

Hub hotels differ slightly from the typical Premier Inn experience as their rooms are more compact, modern and affordable. The first of three on this list, the Royal Mile branch has rave reviews – but it’s a bit of a letdown with some complaining about its “dirty” rooms and “disorganized” service.

One visitor said: “This is my first visit to Edinburgh and I couldn’t have been made more welcome by the staff at the Hub. They are friendly and can’t do enough to help you. The bedrooms are very clean. The hotel is about 10 minutes from the old town and into the new town.”
