Steve Jobs famously disliked the stylus, considering it a poor input method for his then-new iPhone. That didn’t stop Apple from inventing and selling its own stylus, the Apple Pencil, designed to work with the iPad.
While some iPads now have stylus support, you can’t use the Apple Pencil on any iPhone.

The reason is technical: the iPad and iPhone have different touchscreens, and the iPhone will need to be reconfigured to support the Apple Pencil.
It’s no wonder Apple is redesigning the iPhone screen—many iPhone users would love to have a compact version of the Apple Pencil for their phone.
But Apple Pencil support was never officially mentioned or even implied. So don’t expect a new iPhone anytime soon.
Although Apple has not shown much interest in introducing a stylus for the iPhone, some accessory manufacturers have filled the gap. If you want to use a stylus with your iPhone, here are a few ways to do it right away:
How To Find A Lost Apple Pencil (1st & 2nd Generation)
The FiftyThree digital pen is unusual – it won’t roll off your desk because it’s flat, and it looks like a traditional drawing tool because it’s made of wood. It works with almost all iPhones, starting with the iPhone 4.
The Adonit Pixel has a pair of programmable shortcut buttons and, like the FiftyThree, is compatible with almost all iPhones from the iPhone 4s onwards.
The MoKo Universal Active Stylus Pen features a carrying clip that makes it difficult to tip over or lose it, and features a two-in-one nib design with a narrow metal tip for precise drawing and a wide rubber tip. Compatible with iPhone 6 and up.

Update: After spending weeks playing with our new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus over the past few years, I thought I’d see if my DIY pen would work with these new devices. I am happy to report that it is as expected.
Original Apple Pencil Vs. Apple Pencil 2
The level of functionality you’ll get out of it is debatable, but I can definitely browse my iPhone while eating lunch without smearing my screen. (Yes, I eat messes.) In addition to painting with apps like brushes, I also put together some creative shots.
Earlier this year, Adobe released Ink and Slide, a pen and sketch ruler package that allows artists and designers to draw more accurately in the official Line and Sketch apps for iPad. The add-ons will save you $200, while also having a number of features like improved pressure sensitivity and automatic backups to your Creative Cloud account.
There is currently no inexpensive alternative to Adobe’s Slide Ruler, but there are plenty of inexpensive pen options available at Target, Best Buy, and other retailers. However, nothing is cheaper than scratching, and there are plenty of free DIY pens that you can make with things you already have around the house.
The simplest example is a wet cotton swab, but thanks to Instructables user DrewClem, we can make some modifications to give it a more sophisticated “pencil” look. Follow me below to create your own homemade pen that will work instead of Adobe Ink. It also works with any app on any smartphone or tablet, not just Adobe or Apple iPad apps.
Charge Your Apple Pencil And Check The Battery
To create a pen for your iPad, you will need the following supplies that are available at home:
Unscrew the pen and remove the ink tube. For this you will only need a transparent polystyrene barrel (pencil tube).
While this is not a necessary step, it helps with perspective. Take a pipe cleaner (color of your choice), fold it slightly shorter than the length of the pencil (cut it if it’s too long) and stick it into the pencil barrel.
Cut the end of the cotton swab about 2 cm (somewhere between 3/4″ and 13/16″) and insert it into the front of the pen.
How To Pair And Charge Apple Pencil 2 With The Devices Are Compatible
Cut a square of aluminum foil at least 6cm x 6cm (or about 2-3/8″) on each side, fold it in half and make a few short cuts around one of the edges. The foil can extend all the way to the end of the pen if you like , but it’s the colored pipe cleaner that enhances our look.
Wrap it around the tip of the pen (cut side towards the cotton swab). Make sure the foil covers some (not all) of the cotton swab or the pen will not work.
If the aluminum foil doesn’t stay in place, tape it underneath to hold it in place.
Add a small drop of water to a cotton swab. You may need to add a drop of water to the tip from time to time to re-energize and maintain conductivity.
Which Ipads Work With Which Apple Pencils?
Or Adobe Line on your iPad. If you don’t have those apps, you can use this pen for other apps as well, which is a feature of Adobe Ink, says Jackie Dove at The Next Web.
Obviously, our Q-Tip version won’t have any printing precision, but that’s a small sacrifice for the fair price of a freebie.
The first time I used the pen, the iPad took a second to recognize it, so if it doesn’t work at first, try for a few more seconds. After that you should be able to draw quite well. Make sure your fingers or hands are touching the aluminum foil when you use it, it won’t work if you don’t (it needs static electricity in your body to work as a capacitive tool).
Considering I’m making a pen out of stuff around my apartment, this cheap trick certainly mimics some of Adobe Ink’s features well and holds up well against any basic capacitive pen on the market.
Apple Pencil 2 Not Compatible With Older Ipads And Original Apple Pencil Won’t Work With New Models
