The weather is very cold, and I dream of a beach vacation. For this #TBT I’m reposting my trip to the Beach Shack Hotel in Cape May.

I recently took an amazing trip to Cape May, one of my favorite places in NJ, to explore the area and write about all the incredible things to do there. I didn’t know that the hotel I stayed in would make my list.

Cape May Bucket List: 19 Things To Do To Have The Best Jersey Shore Vacation

The Beach Shack, located across the street from the beach, is a newly renovated hotel owned by Cape May Resorts.

This family and dog friendly vacation spot is also home to the Rusty Nail, an iconic surfer bar and restaurant.

The hotel includes free parking with your hotel stay (super convenient), cleaning products like shampoo, conditioner, etc. from Beach Plum Farms, a kitchen (complete with mini-fridge, microwave, and coffee maker) and more.

One of my favorite things to do on my trip was sitting on the beach that was steps away from the hotel. A Cape May vacation is nothing without a trip to the beach, and the Beach Shack is there. It doesn’t get any easier than that.

The Beach Shack also offers beach signs, towels, chairs and umbrellas. No need to park the car … all you need is right at the hotel. It was cool.

I had the privilege of sitting on the beach, reading a book, and even had the opportunity to see dolphins where I stayed! Definitely the highlight of my trip.

On my first night there I had dinner at the Rusty Nail which is located inside the hotel and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It is a family-friendly and dog-friendly restaurant, so dog-friendly that they offer a menu just for dogs!

In addition to food, the restaurant has live music, a sand bar, an indoor fireplace, shuffleboard, and an outdoor fire pit. Plus kids’ meals served on a souvenir Beach Shack Frisbee.

New England’s 38 Essential Restaurants

Breakfast options include eggs, omelets, pancakes, and French toast; lunch items such as burgers, sandwiches, salads, soups, nachos, tacos, and mac and cheese; and dinners like seafood, ribs, steak, and pasta.

I started my meal with a margarita and fried mac and cheese balls. You can’t go wrong with a margarita, and I highly recommend the classic Rusty Shack. I also recommend the mac and cheese balls, which are fried and served with horseradish sauce.

For dinner, I ordered their famous crab cakes topped with a strawberry whiskey sour. Whiskey sours are made with fresh strawberries, Maker’s Mark, and simple syrup.

I can’t stress enough how delicious the crab cakes were. They came with a choice of two sides so I ordered the old fries with seasonal vegetables. You can order the crab cakes grilled or fried.

And for dessert, I had the homemade lime pie and tea. It was a great way to end the evening.

This location was perfect for my vacation because it was walking distance to almost everything I wanted to do in downtown Cape May and West Cape May. I’m all about stress-free and comfortable travel, and this hotel made everything easy.

Before I left, I also spent time at the pool, enjoyed my cozy room, and picked up all my Beach Plum Farm products.

The climactic moment came when the Sun God sent one last fire over the Delaware Bay and its rays of light caught the smoke that danced on my Tobacco Road drink. Did the food mermaid floating over my wife’s drink at the Lookout really just wink? It could be my imagination, but another fun beach day was in the books. And one thing was clear: Even if this massive octagon of a restaurant on the Cape May-Lewes Ferry hasn’t quite hit its stride as the Shore’s brightest new opening, it’s certainly bigger and more dramatic.

“We picked the worst year to open three new restaurants, you know, with seasonal equipment shortages, worst staffing shortages ever, protein prices going up 40% and menu prices only going up 5 to 10%. It’s crazy. !” said Wright with a wicked smile.

Publisher, retailer and restaurateur Exit Zero, which previously operated the popular Exit Zero service station in Cape May, has won a $3 million contract with its partners to open a new food complex at the Cape May-Lewes Ferry Terminal with two years to complete. The massive project, which includes more than 500 seats in four concepts on several levels, goes through rapid adjustments every season as the staff changes and the latest openings are expected to shake. There are plans to turn the mansion into an expansive park and entertainment center, complete with a shopping village, this fall.

Lookout is already an interesting place to eat next to a sunset view, with seriously fun cocktails and food that is better than I expected.

Maybe it’s a trend? Despite my skepticism that a fine pen rarely brings better food than an afterthought, we ate at a few new restaurants this summer that were as good as the views from the blue-and-white-striped beach tents and towering masts. in a marina This was especially true near the Wildwoods and Cape May at the south end of the Shore, where some of the liveliest restaurant energy can be found this season.

And my passion is not limited to fancy big ticket meals. North Wildwood has a new barbecue joint. An independent BYOB in Cape May, where a veteran local chef is finally starting an owner-operator show. Equally exciting: a beachside patio that serves grilled oysters, local ingredients for its lunch menu, and Instagrammed “block parties” at sunset.

Exit Zero Ferry opened last weekend with 224 seats between its casual indoor-outdoor space and an amazing menu of steaks, burgers, and disco fries like the original Cape May, plus fried rice, spaghetti, and Cajun sweetbreads. (“literally all over the map,” Wright says. But the second-floor Lookout managed to open its 120-seat octagonal dining room and patio for fine dining just in time for Memorial Day. Wright soon began to have second thoughts. The menu. , which was very traditional for him – bisque and à la carte steak.

The 16 Towns Of Cape Cod: Which One Is Best For You?

“It’s more of a steakhouse than mine,” said Wright, who is transitioning to head chef and aims to make the dishes both less predictable and a better value. These composite lists, however, still range from the $30s to the $50s for chips.

We visited The Lookout before its metamorphosis began, but chef de cuisine Nick Mullavey was wondering what changes he wants. He served an excellent crab cake with corn salsa, classic casino clams, and an Indian Ridge dry-aged steak that was the best I’ve tasted on the Shore. (All are still on the menu). Salmon Wellington is the signature dish, but I opted for local seafood instead and was not disappointed: five large scallops on heirloom cabbage garnished with bacon, golden grapes, and verjus vinaigrette. Pastry chef Emily Newton even inspired me to re-embrace crème brûlée with her silk cake.

What is really missing is also in the works: an interior renovation to soften the cavernous room with a large carpet, banquette, central fireplace, and window treatments to reduce noise. Until then, good luck chatting with your dinner date over this beautiful view.

That was the credo of Bill Bumbernick of Swine Bar, which he installed last year on the deck above The Surfing Pig, his North Wildwood barbecue joint. And unlike the hour-long lines for ribs at his smokehouse, the Pig Bar, despite its cheesy name, is one of the few places on the Shore where you can reserve a table for a leisurely meal with a view of the sunset marina a.
