I just got back from my first trip to Canada! I spent just under a week in Edmonton, Alberta. It’s the province you may know is home to Banff and Jasper National Parks, but I was there for a different reason. He was six days old and wanted to eat around town. A tough challenge right?

From Chinese bao and Mexican tacos to the best Ukrainian cuisine and epic brunches, Edmonton is a true foodie city with a restaurant for every craving. There are some great restaurants for meat lovers, but the vegan and vegetarian scene is also growing in popularity.

This is a really great restaurant, and it’s huge! I love the various lights hanging around the main area of the restaurant, and as I visited at lunchtime, I could imagine it being especially beautiful at night.
The lunch menu was an interesting mix of international flavors. The restaurant describes its food as a blend of familiar and distant flavors made from traditional and trend-setting ingredients. From steamed pork loin to pizzas and truffle sandwiches, it was hard to choose what to have!

I went on a lifestyle that I would describe as “probably the healthiest thing I’ve ever eaten”…but don’t let that put you off, it was also very tasty! It has spiralized greens, quinoa, avocado, rice noodles and is topped with a fried egg and a tangy lemon dressing. The Indian-inspired buttered eggplant with paneer and chickpeas was another winner.
This place is part cafe and part general store that sells a fun collection of gifts. Brunch is their main event, and it’s as photogenic as it gets with perfectly poached eggs sitting on thick bacon and topped with Dutch apple cider. It was also an intense #eggporn moment!
I really liked the atmosphere – it had that community spirit that you don’t find in many places (maybe because it was in a residential area rather than commercial) and I saw lots of posters for events, including backyard BBQs with live music, food and drinks.
One of Edmonton’s coolest restaurants, Baijiu was one of my favorite places to eat in the city. The modern Asian restaurant serves baos, tempura, spring rolls, fried noodles, grilled fish, crispy steaks and more. It is located in the Mercer Building, just minutes from Rogers Place, the city’s new stadium and home of the Edmonton Oilers.

We ordered several dishes to share, including pork baos, beef noodles, tempura asparagus and chicken gyozas. Everything was absolutely delicious, and when the chef suggested we also try the deviled tea eggs, we couldn’t resist! All the flavors were wonderful, with a particular nod to the sweeter sauce the gyozas were in (sour, rich and flavorful) and the thick, delicious noodles.
All this love for a restaurant, and I haven’t even gotten to the cocktails! Baiju is also a cocktail bar. To be honest, if the jet lag hadn’t set in, I would have moved on to the drinks menu as well.
With a no-booking policy and long shared tables, MEAT could be lifted from Shoreditch or Brooklyn, and this restaurant in the cool area off Whyte Avenue is as hipster as the city. It’s all about BBQ, and these guys really know what they’re doing!
The ribs were so delicious, the smoked chicken was full of flavor and we even tried some of the curd and pancetta. The sides were great too, with Brussels sprouts, an indulgent mac and cheese, delicious baked beans and garlic fries.

Oh, and when you visit, don’t forget to try some of their tasty homemade sauces, which include BBQ, cherry and bourbon. I’m also on authority that this is the best place for pecan pie…okay, I’ll admit it, I’m the authority!
El Cortez is another good place to eat just off Whyte Avenue in Old Strathcona. It’s very hip, with a dimly lit gothic restaurant area, a green lit bar, murals and collages all over the walls, and retro movie screens.
The menu was a feast of delicious Mexican flavors (one of my favorite cuisines!) and while we drank some delicious cocktails we ordered two batches of tacos. The steak, pickled vegetables and BBQ aioli were very tasty, but my favorites were the grilled fish and the crispy shrimp tacos which were topped with habanero aioli and a tasty tropical coconut sauce.
Although this is not an obvious “restaurant” to visit as such, if you are interested in a cultural experience, definitely go to the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village from Edmonton. It is like going through history and mapping the movement of Ukrainians as they settled in the region, established homes, businesses and found their place in society.

I found it fascinating to hear that so many Ukrainians moved to Canada between 1890 and 1930 and obviously brought their Eastern European cuisine with them.
Besides making some pyrohi (Ukrainian dumplings) in an old kitchen, we sampled a selection of traditional dishes with a modern twist in their cafe. On the menu were potato cakes, borscht (beetroot soup), kielbasa (sauce) and a cardamom fried dough dessert.
The Muttart Conservatory was one of my favorite places in Edmonton. The four glass pyramids act as greenhouses that contain incredible plants from different climates on the planet.
We combined our visit with a trip to the Culina Café. The brunch menu was great with Eggs Benedict and French Toast catching my eye. However, I was craving something lighter, so I opted for the large house salad, which contained deliciously crunchy greens, chickpeas, grains, blueberries and a deliciously salty feta.
Eat Your Way Through The Mountains
My favorite coffee shop I came across during my trip, Block 1912 serves great coffee in a very beautiful setting. It’s a huge room with funky lights hanging (we were actually driving past in a taxi and I saw the lights from the window and wanted to check it out right away!) and a cozy alcove full of books.
It’s also great for so many situations: if you’re looking for a digital nomad space to chill with your Macbook, a dessert spot with the girls or a coffee date.
After doing some research on ramen and pho joints in town, we splurged on Pho Boy, and it paid off! It’s another fantastic member of Whyte Avenue’s popular dining scene. With huge murals on the walls, a retro arcade machine and fantastic string lights hanging from the ceiling, it has a fun atmosphere, perfect for a meal with a group of friends.
Pho Boy’s Vietnamese street food is full of flavor and considering we visited on a Sunday around 6pm, it was packed! Their pho was absolutely delicious with a very intense beef broth. It was served with a tray of additional ingredients that we could add to the flavor (chili, beans, fresh herbs, lime). We also ordered a portion of legend rolls – the restaurant’s specialty crispy spring rolls which were totally more delicious!

This retro restaurant in Edmonton’s trendy Warehouse District was a great find. I love the quirky decor with vintage lamps, scrap panels and local artist work on the walls.
To visit for lunch, I stopped into the Blue Plate Breakfast, their “full works” that include fried new potatoes, eggs, toast and freshly cooked meats. Very tasty and most importantly, the coffee was good and strong! The lunch and dinner options also looked inviting, with many international dishes including spring rolls, gnocchi and even an English shepherd’s pie – certainly not something I see every day when I travel!
Last but not least, one of the best ways to get to know Edmonton’s food scene is to book a food tour. This was one of the highlights of my time in the city. Starting at Kitchen By Brad, we enjoyed a big breakfast of (mostly) Ukrainian delicacies. Then we took a trip around the huge Saturday market at 104
We tried gyozas, meat pies and salted caramel, talked to jam producers and fishermen and ended the morning with a wine tasting. The guide was very knowledgeable and it was an opportunity to really understand why food is the heartbeat of the city.
