Best Restaurant At Grove Park Inn – At its opening banquet in 1913, Secretary of State William Jennings Bryan announced that the Grove Park Inn had been “many years in the making.” Fresh off a $25 million renovation, the AAA four-diamond resort hotel in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains has proven itself and is marking its 100-year milestone with a year-long celebration. Rest assured that the architectural details that helped make the building iconic — the carved rock and massive stone fireplaces that dominate the Great Hall — remain intact. New to the mix are retail shops featuring local artisans and Addison’s, a restaurant specializing in local beer and Southern comfort food. It is named after Thomas Edison, one of the inn’s many famous guests, including 10 US presidents, most recently Barack Obama.

When you enter the Great Hall, you definitely feel like a VIP. Its rustic charm and constellation of timeless Arts and Crafts furniture (one of the finest in the nation) continue to draw visitors, and the views of the surrounding mountains that have greeted visitors for generations are unparalleled. And although the atmosphere is good, the atmosphere is dark. Families play classic board games and lovebirds snuggle by the fire, as live music — from jazz standards to Celtic ballads — fills the halls.

. In fact, it is easy to imagine that the former resident F. Scott Fitzgerald stood by his window in room 441, just down the hall, drink in hand, checking each guest’s arrival.

Considering that this is an inn based on the principles of comfort and relaxation, be sure to visit the 43,000-square-foot underground spa, which appears to have been carved out of the mountain rock. This sanctuary of mineral pools caters to all the senses with underwater music, hot tubs, steam rooms and healing springs. If you can’t take the fresh Appalachian air, schedule a massage at the year-round outdoor pagoda overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains or book a tee time at the historic Donald Ross-designed golf course. Then pick up a cold mug of Centennial Ale or a specialty cocktail (served in a take-home souvenir glass) to honor this mountain inn and its enduring allure.

It took 400 men 10 hours a day, six days a week to build the Grove Park Inn in less than a year. When it opened in 1913, none other than William Jennings Bryan gave the keynote address. When Brian said the inn was “built for years,” he wasn’t kidding. An impressive hotel is probably more beautiful than the day it opened. Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the main stone formation looks like something out of a romance novel.
