Best Place To Eat In Natchitoches La – Natchitoches is pronounced “nack-a-tish” and calls itself the City of Lights. Cane River Lake runs through the heart of the city and stretches for nearly 33 miles (53.1 km). Natchitoches is picturesque and full of historic buildings, but the lake enhances the view and atmosphere. The entire state of Louisiana is famous for its Cajun and Creole cuisine, but Natchitoches restaurants put their spin on expected dishes and create new ones for locals and visitors to enjoy. Read on for our selection of must-try dishes and the best places to eat in Natchitoches!

1. Yam Cakes and More at French Market Express Source: Connie Pearson It may come as a surprise, but some really good food can be found at a gas station. Unless, of course, that gas station happens to be French Market Express. Alligator and pudding sausage links, potato wedges and pudding balls are some of the entree options, but save room for dessert, though. French Market Express is the only place where you can buy Louisiana Yam Cake, a delicious combination of sweets, coconut and walnuts. It is cooked on the premises using a closely guarded secret recipe. Also note that French Market Express bakes fresh gingerbread every day, not just during the holiday season. 2. Meat pies are a Natchitoches signature dish. Source: Connie Pearson. The meat pies, with seasoned beef and sausage cooked in the crust, appear as a must-try item when visiting Natchitoches. Since they may seem bland to lovers of bold flavors, they often serve a variety of sauces along with the meat pies. Some of the best can be found at the Cane River Commissary, which is also known for Creole dishes like Creole pasta, gumbo, or orange/red jambalaya. (If the jambalaya is brown, it is considered Cajun). 3. Fried Meat Pies and Shrimp Pies at Lasyone’s Source: Connie Pearson The meat pies at Lasyone’s Meat Pie Kitchen are fried, not baked, and the shrimp version is fantastic. Both the meat pies and the shrimp pies are so popular that they are available for nationwide delivery through Goldbelly.com. Angela Lasyone took over the business when her parents retired and continued the tradition they started in 1967. Lasyone’s serves breakfast and lunch. You may be interested in these Airbnbs! Cajun Potatoes at Merci Beaucoup Source: Connie Pearson Merci Beaucoup is usually a lunch spot, but on Christmas Day it’s open late for all the light viewing and views of Front Street. and by the river. The restaurant serves Cajun and Creole favorites, and I can personally attest that the Cajun baked potatoes are one of the tastiest dishes I’ve ever tasted. The potato is tender and topped with an amazing boiled shrimp full of richly flavored shrimp tail meat, then topped with a fried jumbo shrimp. The bread pudding at Merci Beaucoup is very good, but I’d suggest you try Louisiana Sin Bar for the decadent layer of chocolate. 5. Pecans at Little Eva Pecan Company Source: Connie Pearson Driving through Natchitoches Parish, you’ll pass acres and acres of giant pecan trees. This will instantly make you think of pecan pie, pecan muffins, pecan cake, and more. When I asked about the best place to buy fresh pecans, I turned to the Little Eva Pecan Company, also known as Natchitoches Pecans. At one time, there were 11,000 acres near Little Eve that constituted the largest pecan plantation in North America. The pecan shop now sits on 400 acres of what was once Little Eva Plantation. It is named for the young woman who befriends Uncle Tom in Harriet Beecher Stowe’s book Uncle Tom’s Cabin. On my visit, three pecan varieties were available for purchase: Caddo, Elliott and Sumner. Visitors are invited to try each type before deciding what they want to buy. The shop is also full of attractive gifts, including some based on the artwork of Clementine Hunter. 6. Oysters Benedict at Mariner’s Restaurant Source: Connie Pearson The location of Mariner’s Restaurant on Lake Sibley is stunning. Owners Ben and Keri Fidelak bought the property during the pandemic and undertook a complete interior remodel, making it one of the most elegant dining spots in the area. Ben is also the chef at Mariner’s and especially enjoys serving up creative dishes like Boudin with Chicken Breast Stuffed Breast or Tomahawk Steaks with Fire Roasted Rosemary. Dancing and live music make this a perfect romantic date spot, but Mariner’s is also extremely popular for Sunday brunch. You’ll be surprised to see Oysters Benedict on the menu here – a unique dish that you won’t find easily. This dish includes half a dozen fried oysters, two poached eggs in andouille sausage and a dollop of pepper jelly reduction – it was very tasty. 7. Elegant Breakfast at a B&B Source: Connie Pearson Natchitoches is called the Bed and Breakfast Capital of Louisiana. Thirty B&Bs in town include homes on the National Register of Historic Places, Cane River Lakefront homes and a home that served as the setting for the popular movie Steel Magnolias. As a general rule, the breakfast portion of the title consists of a sumptuous and elegant meal. Some of the dishes served at Violet Hill Bed & Breakfast, for example, include pancakes with apple strudel, French toast filled with cream cheese, Belgian waffles with apple spice or quiche with a side of rosemary potatoes. Visitors to Natchitoches will want to consider staying at a B&B in order to have this delicious experience. 8. Smoked Meat at Grayson’s Bar-B-Q Source: Connie Pearson Your mouth will start salivating in the parking lot when you smell Grayson’s Bar-B-Q. The pulled pork and brisket are great, but the smoked bacon puts this place over the top. When the meat is served with a homemade bread, soft potato salad and large cauliflower, you will be a happy eater. Be sure to save room for Grayson’s legendary pie. You might want to order one to take home, and by the way, Grayson’s food would be delicious while watching your favorite team on TV. Natchitoches Offers a Wide Flavor Profile Visitors to Natchitoches have the opportunity to eat amazing foods. Meat pies and tarts may be the dishes synonymous with the city, but a wide range of options are available. From fresh pecans to smoked meats and Creole specialties to cajun, food will become one of your favorite things to do in Natchitoches. Start planning a visit soon. Christmas is six weeks away and a particularly lovely time to come, but other seasons have their fun too. I promise you won’t leave hungry. Disclosure: select lists from our articles independently.
