Hiap Joo Bakery is one of the oldest and most popular traditional bakeries in Johor. It offers good breads with fresh malt flavor and aromatic banana cakes. If you come for their banana cake, like us, get up early, even though the banana cakes aren’t ready until noon. Hiap Jua was founded in 1919 and still uses the wood-fired oven in the wall to make fresh cakes and breads. This is the best banana cake I have ever tasted. It is moist, fragrant and very reasonably priced. Due to the limited number of seats in the store, customers have to wait in line to enter the store.

Standard Cold Storage :: Frozen Food Supplier Johor Bahru (jb)

For a traditional breakfast, head to Kin Wah (锦华餐室) along Jalan Tan Hiok Ni “Street of Culture” (文化街). It’s a simple, no-nonsense kopitiam that sells old-fashioned breakfast. This place serves one of the best coffees and half-boiled eggs in my opinion. The coffee is strong and has the right balance of sugar and milk. Put it on your nose and feel the unique aroma of coffee. Kin Hua Restaurant uses kampung chicken eggs to make half-boiled eggs. The eggs have a firmer texture, but are still perfectly cooked!

Roti Canai Bukit Chagar (Halal) Address: Jalan Bukit Chagar and Jalan Ungku Aziz (next to Pine View Apartments and PDRM Apartments) Opening Hours: 6am to 11am (breakfast only, roti canai is often sold at 10am)

One of our most memorable breakfasts in Johor was at Bukit Chagar, where we had freshly made Roti Canai. I like their pratas because it is thick, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. It’s not too greasy either. Prata goes very well with its Dal. For those who like a little more spice, you can add a little curry for an extra kick. We had 5 pratas and the bill was less than RM8.00!

Kok Yow Yong 霍电影 Address: Jalan Trus and Jalan Pasar Intersection, Johor Bahru Old Center Opening Hours: 6:00 AM – 1:00 PM (Closed on Sundays)

Top 12 Desaru Food You Must Definitely Give It A Try

Located in Jalan Dobi, Kok Yow Yong is a herbal tea shop that is over 100 years old. Run by two sisters, it serves freshly brewed herbal tea at RM1.00 per glass. You can use the bitter version or sweetened. If you can’t handle the heat, try chrysanthemum tea instead. They separate the chrysanthemum flowers by hand and use other plant powder to make the drink. Apart from these two drinks, the lady boss also makes an energy drink or what we call “special tea”. Give it a try if you’re nearby.

Ah Hua 亚华 kway teow soup (Restoran Sekee 司機) Address: no. 30 Jalan Segget, 80000 Johor Bahru Opening Hours: 7:30am – 2:30pm (Closed on Saturdays)

Ah Hua Teochew Kway Teow is one of the oldest Kway Teow soup shops in town. There are many branches around, but the closest to Singapore is just a few minutes’ walk from the Johor Bahru outlet. The most amazing feature of this stall is that charcoal is still used to cook the soup. Their recipe has been passed down from generation to generation. However, be prepared to pay as a bowl of kway teu soup costs RM16.00 here. You can eat liver, kidney, abalone slices and more. You get a bowl filled with ingredients like Although the price is a bit high, they have repeat customers. And that says a lot about them.

Another bakery in Jalan Dobi is Salahuddin Bakery, which has been operating since 1937. It is a family business that has stood the test of time. They use a traditional charcoal oven to bake fresh bread. If you look around, the walls are lined with black and white photos of the owners and many articles. Try the triangular curry puff; it is filled with a rich filling.

Tody’s Wine Shop, Kedai Tuak Awam Address: Along Jalan Sulaiman, Johor Bahru City Center Opening Hours: 10am – 4pm

Want some coconut wine? Just behind the Shell gas station (along Jalan Wong Ah Fook) is Tody’s Wine Shop. Toddy is an alcoholic drink made from coconut palm juice. Alcohol content is from 2 to 10%. Toddy is said to help relieve cold symptoms similar to our Chinese herbal tea. I ordered a cup (RM3.00) to try. It tastes and looks like barley water. The blow will come after a while.

Sang Heng Cafe Address: 7 Jalan Tan Hiok Ni, Bandar Johor Bahru (Near OCBC JB Branch) Opening Hours: 7am – 1pm (Closed on Saturdays)

Next to OCBC Bank is another traditional Teochew Kway Teow shop run by an old man. Uncle always wears a formal shirt with short sleeves on the stand. If you’re there on a weekday, be prepared to wait in line as most of the office workers patronize the shop during breakfast and lunch hours.

Best Seafood Restaurants To Visit In Johor Bahru

We tried a bowl of Teowchew Kway Teow Soup (RM6.00) and Dry Fish Ball Noodles (RM6.00). Teochew Kway Teow soup includes pork balls, fish balls, bean sprouts, small shrimps and minced pork. The broth of the soup is light and comforting. Dry Fish Noodles consists of cool mee kia made with cool and spicy chilies.

Awarded ‘Best Chicken in Malaysia’ by The Star in 2003, IT Roo operates in a pre-war building that attracts many locals and tourists alike. IT Roo has two types of halal certified chicken – grilled or fried. The Grilled Chicken (RM14.00) is my favourite. Using thick and juicy chicken legs, the chicken is grilled to perfection and drizzled liberally with black pepper sauce or mushroom sauce. Some of us opted for the Fried Chicken (RM14.00) with a thick, nice sauce (but not too much). When you slice the chicken, you get tender meat that goes well with the chili sauce.

Try the herb-roasted duck with charcoal grill and roast pork. Duck meat and skin are lean and soft. The herbal dressing is gentle and comforting. If roast duck isn’t enough to fill your stomach, you can opt for Zee Char and Double Boiled Soups. Set meals are also available for groups of various sizes. All prices and dishes are displayed on a white board attached to the wall. Eating would be a pleasure if there were less houseflies around.

Kam Long Curry Fish Head (金龙咖喱鱼头) Address: 74, Jalan Wong Ah Fook, Bandar Johor Bahru, 80000 Johor Bahru Tel: +6 016-752-8382 / +6 016-796-2216 – Open: Open Hours: 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Monday to Sunday)

Fish head curry for breakfast? Most of us find it too heavy, but Kam Long Curry Fish Head is a must-go. Just 5 minutes away from City Square Mall, you will find Kam Long Curry Fish Head. In business for over 30 years, Kam Long only sells curry fish head and is well known by locals and Singaporeans alike.

The tender flesh of angko li (red snapper) absorbs the curry flavor well. The spices from the curry do not enhance the natural flavor of the fish head. It comes with tofu skin, chickpeas, long beans and cabbage. I like tau pok (deep fried bean curd) which soaks up the delicious sauce well. If you want to go to Cam Long, I suggest you arrive before 11.30am as the line will be shorter. By 2:30 p.m., the curry was almost sold out.

Restoran Hua Mui 华美茶餐室 Address: 131 Jalan Trus, 80000 Johor Bahru Opening Hours: 8am-6pm (daily) Tel: +607-224 7364

Hua Mui Kopitiam started in 1948 and expanded to several outlets in Johor Bahru. The two-story cafe has super retro furniture and serves traditional Hainanese-style breakfasts and Hainanese chicken specialties. Due to its long history and certified halal status, many Muslims/Malays also eat here. Freshly baked butter bread and soft-boiled eggs toasted over a charcoal fire seem like the perfect start to any day. The coffee here is amazing – thick and aromatic.
