It aims to protect consumers, technicians and car repair center owners while helping to improve the quality of repairs to promote excellence.

Certifications are available for automotive technicians, service writers, and parts managers. ASE certification gives the consumer concrete proof of their knowledge. To pass the ASE test, an auto technician must have two years of experience or a two-year automotive repair degree with one year of experience.

After obtaining your ASE certification, you must retest every five years. Did you know that on average one in three candidates pass the ASE test? ASE certification tests are created by experienced technicians, automakers, professionals, industry leaders, and educators. More than 40 exams are held in a range of areas including medium and heavy trucks, buses and collision repair.

As of July 2020, thousands of technicians across the country currently hold these certifications. Here at Kneble’s Auto Service Center, we are proud to say that our technicians are ASE certified and are constantly updating their skills as technology advances.

ASE is divided into vehicle types (cars, trucks, buses) and subsystems. These tests cover a wide range of mobile supplies for modern technicians. There are eight main certificates for each type of vehicle that meet minimum maintenance and repair skills. We’ll look at A1-A8 for basic service, where most technicians start.

Auto Mechanic (automotive Technician) Resume Examples

The same eight topics are discussed in Section T for trucks and Section H for transit buses. Category S includes school buses that do not have air conditioning.

Once you have completed all eight core certifications in Section A, you are eligible to take the ASE Masters Certification Test for Purpose Technician. Each type of vehicle has different requirements regarding the prerequisites for passing the test; School buses only require an S1-S6 certificate, with some flexibility for medium-duty trucks and transit bus routes. Earning a Masters indicates that you have the knowledge needed to be a valuable mechanic in any owner’s shop.

Once you’ve made it to the top eight and earned your master’s certification, the next step in the ASE process is a collection of dozens of sub- and recertifications. These are available to refresh recognition in existing core subjects, which is mandatory every five years. Others are increasingly related to service types or vehicle manufacturing.

There is no specific list of which additional ASE certifications you must obtain. Instead, use it to increase your versatility and improve your technical skills to present a more attractive resume to potential employers. For example, a certification like E1-E3 makes it easier to apply to a company that primarily maintains trucks and other large diesel vehicles. On the other hand, if you’re applying to a garage that does air conditioning repair, you’re more likely to get hired if you’re certified for a variety of vehicles. The more certifications you have, the more attractive you will be to a future boss.

What Does It Mean For A Mechanic To Be Ase Certified?

Manufacturers offer training and certification to technicians who want to improve their technical skills. The requirements for obtaining such certifications can vary widely from manufacturer to manufacturer, but often require additional training and work experience with the manufacturer’s vehicles.

Any qualification on this list requires secondary education, which includes a mix of mobile and hands-on experience.
