2019 iMac Review: The Best of the Past Warning: This story has not been updated in several years and may contain outdated information.

2019 Imac

The 2019 iMacs are a paradox. These are the latest computers that somehow look like the last members of the death row. These are shells created in 2012 that somehow contain 8th and 9th generation Intel processors. They represent Apple’s broad-based entry-level Mac desktop, but can rival the performance of the entry-level iMac Pro. They are part of a legacy that once represented the core of the Mac market, but now fill specific niches in a world consumed by mobile technology.

I had the opportunity to spend a few weeks with a top-of-the-line 5K iMac with a 9th generation Intel processor, and its performance was impressive. There’s no denying that the iMac is better than it’s ever been, and there’s no denying that it’s a product line that’s needed an overhaul over the years.

We live in a world of mobile devices. These days we have phones and tablets and laptops—for years, laptops accounted for two-thirds to three-quarters of all Macs sold. That makes the iMac more and more of an outlier, given that the Mac business is part of Apple’s overall device business.

And still the iMac is important. Apple sells billions of dollars a year of iMacs, shared home computers and corporate desktops, and dozens of other places that find value in having a large display and simple aluminum external computer at retail kiosks. No, it’s not what it used to be—my discussions with Apple’s iMac product manager make it clear that Apple has shifted its iMac messaging to focus on specific use cases rather than trying to sell it as a device with broad appeal.

My family had an iMac at the center of our computing life. My wife used it for her work, I used it to edit videos and photos, and my kids used it to play games when they were little. But that was a decade ago. Now we all have laptops and tablets and phones and no family computer anymore. Now things are different.

Still, there are areas where the iMac can play a role. Equipped with a large hard drive, it can be an ideal place to store and organize family photos. The iMac got a 5K Retina display in 2014 (the 4K model followed in 2015), which was a big step forward. Current models support a fairly wide color gamut with high resolution. They are excellent devices for that use. There’s something to be said for locating a Mac somewhere in your home to use as a homework machine, forcing a student to not focus on a laptop or iPad while sitting in their bedroom.

The iMac is a great value because it comes with that high-definition screen. If you want to configure a Mac mini and a 4K iMac with the same specs, you’re only $400 away from buying a 4K display. At $800 for a 5K iMac you won’t get a display of iMac quality for that price, so unless you want to spend more for the flexibility of switching the display or the computer separately, the iMac is probably the right choice.

The iMac’s configuration options cover a lot of ground, from low-cost entry-level models to expensive high-end features. Choosing the right model for you can be confusing.

No one should buy a $1099 21.5-inch iMac that wasn’t part of the 2019 update. That’s because it allows Apple to say it’s still selling an iMac for $1099 — but it’s powered by a seventh-generation Intel processor and doesn’t have a Retina display. Like the $999 MacBook Air, this is a computer that shouldn’t be marketed as “new” in 2019.

The middle configuration of the 21.5-inch iMac, at $1299, has an 8th-generation Intel processor and a 4K Retina display, both of which are good. But it’s let down by its slow 1TB hard drive, which lacks the initial speed boost you get by adding a little solid-state storage and turning it into a hybrid device that Apple calls a Fusion drive. Converting it to a Fusion drive costs up to $1399, which is the lowest acceptable configuration for iMacs sold today.

If you want the power but not that massive 5K display, one option is to configure the highest possible 4K iMac with an 8th generation Intel i7 processor, Radeon Pro Vega 20 graphics and pure SSD storage. These options will increase the price to over $2000, but you’ll have a very powerful little iMac. The only major downside is that, unlike the 27-inch model, you can’t upgrade the RAM on the 21.5-inch iMac. Configure accordingly.

On the 5K iMac side, Apple’s standard configurations are better. Blank storage is a fusion drive rather than a blank spinning disk, which is fine, but a pure SSD is always a better option if you can afford it. While the 9th generation Intel i5 and i9 processors are very impressive, your first upgrade option should be ditching a Fusion drive for an SSD. After that, you may want to upgrade your RAM or go for a faster processor. All of these models have six processor cores and high Turbo Boost speeds, so I wouldn’t bother upgrading the processor unless you have very specific high needs – basically, if you’re a pro-level user trying to build a cheap iMac Pro.

Earlier this month we talked about how the high-end 2019 iMac with its 9th generation Core i9 processor measures up to the base model iMac Pro. The truth is, you can save a lot of money by trading off some of the iMac Pro’s very good features and spec’ing a 5K iMac instead. My top-of-the-line iMac matched my base model iMac Pro in multi-processor tests and beat it in single-core tests.

In a few places, especially Logic Pro and Final Cut Pro X, my iMac Pro came out on top, probably because my iMac Pro’s GPU is slightly more powerful and it has twice the RAM (32GB) of the iMac I tested.
